Refresh the foundation coaching skills that help managers listen well, ask useful questions and support people to find their own way forward. The Coaching Refresher Workshop gives participants time to revisit the basics techniques of effective coaching and put them into practice. Through demonstrations, discussion and coaching practice, participants strengthen their confidence in listening, questioning, asking permission and using the GROW Model.
A central feature is the GROW Diamond: a visual guide to the shape of a complete coaching conversation:
The GROW Diamond shows how a coach can establish the outcome, explore the coachee’s goal and current reality, broaden the options, and help them decide what they can commit to doing. Time checks, summaries and a thoughtful close help the conversation stay focused. The Diamond offers a useful structure while leaving the coach free to respond to the coachee.
Who is this workshop for?
This workshop is for managers, leaders and coaches who have already learned foundation coaching skills and would like to refresh and strengthen their practice. It can be tailored for individuals or teams and linked to the conversations and challenges participants encounter at work.
What does the workshop cover?
Participants revisit and practise:
- Listening: recognising different levels of listening and giving someone the space to think aloud.
- Clarifying and Reflecting: checking understanding by reflecting someone’s words or summarising what they have said.
- Permission Protocol: using permission to offer an idea, make a suggestion or raise a concern while respecting the other person’s choice.
- Questioning: asking open, focused questions that help people explore their situation and think for themselves.
- The GROW Model: using Goal, Reality, Options and Will to give a coaching conversation direction.
- The GROW Diamond: understanding how a full coaching conversation can develop, including time checks, summaries, commitment and closure.
What will participants gain?
Participants will have the opportunity to:
- Refresh and consolidate the coaching skills they already use.
- Share experiences and learn how colleagues apply coaching at work.
- Bring challenging situations to the trainer for discussion, guidance and mentoring.
- Explore how to use the GROW Model with greater confidence and flexibility.
- Develop greater fluency and mastery in their coaching conversations.
By refreshing shared skills and learning from one another, participants also help sustain and strengthen a coaching culture across the organisation.
How is the workshop delivered?
The workshop is practical and interactive, and may be delivered online or in person. Participants learn through trainer demonstrations, discussion and coaching practice in pairs or small groups. They can use realistic workplace situations to explore how the skills apply in their own conversations.
How long is the workshop?
A three-hour online version refreshes the core skills. A full-day in-person version allows more time for coaching practice and individual trainer feedback. The format can be adapted to the group’s experience and requirements.
