Performance Coaching for Leadership

Established in 1974, IG is the world’s leading spread-betting and contract-for-difference provider, serving clients in 14 countries. We have been providing performance coach training courses to IG in the UK for several years, through our partnership with the Kent County Council’s South East Coaching & Mentoring Network. After the success of this face-to-face training, Anna Kopysiewicz, Talent & Organisational Development Manager at IG, wanted to roll the programme out to its local centres all over the world, but the cost would have been prohibitive.

Solutions

We proposed a distance training programme delivered by webinar and based on the same “Performance Coaching for Leadership” courses which we had been delivering face-to-face to IG. Taking into account IG’s worldwide stretch, Anna agreed that our distance course would be the best option for its international training.

Outcomes

Initially we delivered the course over 12 sessions, each lasting for 90 minutes. participants simultaneously attended from Australia, India, Poland and the UK, starting at 9am in the UK and 6pm in Melbourne, and later courses extended to UK and America as well. During the first programme it was established that there was never any drop in energy or attention, so future course sessions were extended to two hours each. This held the advantage that participants could complete the programme in only eight sessions over four months. In both cases, we ran a final session comprising a day-long virtual event, where participants attended in pairs at hourly intervals to coach each other, observed by our assessor.

In between each training session, participants completed our customary practice assignments, in pairs on the phone, and in their various workplaces, in order to embed the skills and integrate them.

These distance courses are being repeated at IG at the rate of one or two per year and, so far, the final standard of learning on them has at least equalled the results obtained through face-to-face training and, in some cases, the level of proficiency reached has exceeded it.

People loved the opportunity to interact with colleagues across the globe whom they might never have the opportunity to meet in person. Preethi Shankar, HR Manager at IG India, told us that through the course, she realised that people are the same everywhere. Although already aware of this, the course gave her insight into how humans behave, that everyone faces the same kinds of challenges, and that those challenges are not limited to any career level, or kind of work, or positions that people might hold. She said that the experience helped her to see the whole world as one global collaborative environment.
