The NHS

Objectives
An NHS Trust in London wanted to commission a coaching skills programme as part of the NHS’s “Agenda for Change” initiative. The requirement was to develop its staff to enhance the learning element of being a teaching hospital.  A group of 8 clinicians and managers were selected to learn coaching skills but not to the level of becoming internal coaches.

Content

  • 3 days of coaching skills training plus a follow up conference call.
  • Between the live and telephone sessions, participants were paired to practise together, and were set practical assignments to carry out in the workplace and reading assignments.
  • A student manual accompanied the course

Outcomes
The participants successfully mastered the use of coaching skills in their day to day working lives and found the skills particularly useful in improving communication between doctors and patients.
